Calibre 2120/2800 was created at Audemars Piguet by three watchmakers who wanted to give a new lease of life to horological complications. At the time, the Swiss watch industry was experiencing the "quartz crisis," the most serious in its history.
The thinnest selfwinding perpetual calendar of its time, Calibre 2120/2800 was first fitted inside Model 5548 designed by Jacqueline Dimier. It met with extraordinary success, resulting in more than 2,000 timepieces being produced. Numerous variations were created in several collections. In 1984, the calibre equipped the first Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, Model 5554, soon followed by other references in this collection, notably: 25636, 25654, 25687, 25688, 25694, 25686, 25775, 25659 and 25773.
Total sales (excluding openworked versions): 6,508 units, of which: 4 (1978), 113 (1979), 154 (1980), 238 (1981), 278 (1982), 431 (1983), 441 (1984), 550 (1985), 588 (1986), 543 (1987), 605 (1988), 561 (1989), 550 (1990), 435 (1991), 354 (1992), 294 (1993), 227 (1994), 124 (1995) and 18 (1996).
