Calibre 2062 was chosen by Audemars Piguet to equip the first women's Royal Oak, Model 8638 launched in 1976. This mechanism was one of the smallest calibres in the Swiss watch industry to be equipped with a selfwinding system.

The blank came from the Manufacture Rayville in Villeret (ref. 662), heir to the Blancpain brand and a major supplier to Omega. Audemars Piguet joined forces with LeCoultre & Cie to adapt the mechanism – with the latter company manufacturing the gold oscillating weight, while the Le Brassus watchmakers were responsible for assembly, finishing and casing-up.

The majority of the approximately 4,000 units produced between 1976 and 1980 were cased up in Model 8638.

In the mid-1980s, a new generation of miniature selfwinding calibres was introduced: thinner and slightly larger than Calibre 2062. Calibres 2130 (which notably equipped the Royal Oak 14470), 2150 and 2132/2805 with perpetual calendar had a diameter of 20.4 mm, while Calibres 2131 (Royal Oak 14486) and 2151 measured 23.3 mm. Calibre 2140 succeeded them in the 1990s.
