Small in size (9 lignes, i.e. 20 mm), Calibre 2140 is a selfwinding movement with a high frequency (28,800 vph i.e. 4 Hertz), a date and a centre seconds hand. Essentially used in women's watches, this calibre was introduced in 1995 to replace the Calibre 2130 family introduced in 1986 (2131, 2150, 2151), a Frédéric Piguet movement blank, with a comparable diameter, but with a lower frequency and a more modest autonomy.
Calibre 2140 remained in the catalogue for 15 years, from 1996 to 2011. It can be found in more than 10 Royal Oak 33 mm references, including the Model 15000 timepieces from 1995 and the 77321 from 2006. It equips the three 30 mm Royal Oak Offshore ladies' watches (77151, 79290 and 77199). Highly efficient for its size, it has appeared in Millenary watches since 1999 and in the Edward Piguet collection since the early 2000s. In 2001, a variation was created to accommodate the perpetual calendar dial under the name 2141/2806. It was used to equip the Edward Piguet Perpetual Calendar 25799.
The 2140 disappeared in the early 2010s. While it was not replaced by any selfwinding calibres before 2020 (Calibre 5800, 23.9 mm in diameter), that was probably because the average size of watches had increased so strongly that small watches with a mechanical calibre temporarily disappeared from collections.
Total production: 12,434 units between 1995 and 2012.
