14843, Royal Oak

Royal Oak 14843

30 mm | Hours, minutes | Calibre 2003SQ | Bracelet 902 | Water-resistant to 20 metres | Launch date: 1993

The Royal Oak 14843 is distinguished by its partially openworked dial, featuring a modelled engraving depicting a "Royal Oak" British army ship. As recalled in the article dedicated to the birth of the Royal Oak watch collection in 1972, Audemars Piguet chose this name because it echoed the spirit of the new watch: robustness, water-resistance, a spirit of conquest, historical depth...

The Audemars Piguet Archives show that Model 14843 is derived from Model 14816, which differs only in terms of its non-openworked calibre and its engraved anchor motif. The Royal Oak 14816 was however never produced, offering proof that sometimes an aborted idea can give rise to another, more fruitful idea...

The 13 units were marketed in 1993, in versions featuring three different materials: yellow gold, platinum and steel. No images of the platinum version have been preserved in the archives.

The yellow gold versions feature a grey rhodium-toned calibre, contrasting with the gold dial. The steel version, on the other hand, has a gold mechanism designed to make the engraving on the silvered plate stand out.

13 units sold in 1993, of which 10 in yellow gold (BA), 2 in platinum (PT) and 1 in steel (ST).

Derived from Model 14816.
